Not to be confused with Dennis Quaid, the American actor.[7]

David George Quaid (born 1977) is a South African–born Irish search engine optimization (SEO) consultant, entrepreneur and technologist. He is the founder and managing partner of Primary Position, an SEO agency headquartered in New York City.[1][5]

Quaid began his working life as a software engineer before moving into digital marketing, entering the SEO industry in 2002.[1] He is known for his work in technical SEO and, more recently, for AI- and large language model (LLM)-driven search optimization, an emerging discipline sometimes called generative engine optimization (GEO).[4] Based between New York City and West Palm Beach, Florida, he is also a co-founder of the media publication Money Asset Lifestyle.[3]

Quaid was born in 1977 in Cape Town, South Africa, shortly after his parents had emigrated from London; the family has Irish roots.[2] His father had studied computer science in the 1960s and worked in information technology, including a period as an IT manager at South African Nylon Spinners, then one of the largest nylon-spinning companies in the southern hemisphere.[2] Quaid has credited his father's career with shaping his own early interest in computing.

He taught himself to program at the age of ten, using an early Epson HX-20 portable computer, and as a teenager experimented with dial-up modems and bulletin board systems (BBS).[2] Because home computer games were not readily available to him, he has said he learned to code by writing his own.[2]

Quaid studied at the Cape Town campus of the University of South Africa.[2][5] The family later returned to Ireland, where he began his professional career.

Career [edit]

Early career and software engineering

Quaid has described himself as self-employed since 1995, when he started a networking and internet-access company in Cape Town and built his first commercial website.[3] After the family's move to Ireland he took his first salaried role as a software engineer at Dell, an experience he has credited with developing his critical-thinking skills.[2][5] He subsequently founded eScape Software, a software-outsourcing company.[5]

Entry into SEO and Primary Position

Quaid entered the SEO industry in 2002, when he identified the potential of the internet as a marketing channel.[1] In the early years of search, he has said, tracking rankings across the era's thousands of search engines required building bespoke tools on an in-house server farm.[2]

In 2005 he founded Primary Position, conceived as an "SEO-only" agency focused on measurable results and return on investment.[1][4] The agency was established in Europe—originally in Ireland—before later relocating to the United States.[3]

Kemp Technologies and move to New York

In 2015 Quaid moved to New York City to lead inbound marketing at Kemp Technologies, an application-delivery and load-balancing company.[3] He served as the company's Director of Inbound Marketing; in 2019 Kemp's management partnered with Mill Point Capital in an acquisition, and the company was later reported to have changed hands for around $250 million.[6] Quaid has cited the period as one of significant growth and industry recognition for the firm.[5]

Around 2020 he also served as interim Chief Marketing Officer of DPV Mobile Lab, a venture focused on COVID-19 testing services.[5]

Primary Position (2020–present)

Since February 2020, Quaid has worked as managing partner of Primary Position, operating it as an independent SEO consultancy.[5] The practice serves business-to-business, SaaS, technology, cybersecurity and financial-technology clients, with stated specialisms spanning technical SEO, content strategy, link building, local and international SEO, and AI/LLM search.[1][4] Reported client engagements include the cyber-threat-intelligence firm IntSights and the document-understanding company Instabase.[3]

Money Asset Lifestyle

In 2024 Quaid co-founded Money Asset Lifestyle, a media publication covering solopreneurship, wealth-building, finance and lifestyle topics for entrepreneurs.[3]

SEO views and methodology [edit]

Quaid summarises his approach with the phrase "context is king," arguing that understanding a user's intent matters more than stylistic notions of "good" content.[2] He advocates building topical authority through comprehensive content clusters and "cornerstoning"—securing early ranking signals on lower-competition queries before expanding—and emphasises technical fundamentals and link-driven authority over surface-level content production.[1]

A self-described technologist, Quaid is publicly sceptical of treating AI-generated text as a substitute for expertise, describing such output as "lowest common denominator" content that summarises the norm and omits valuable outliers.[2] At the same time he encourages optimising for AI retrieval alongside conventional rankings, and is frequently described as an AI- and LLM-focused SEO practitioner.[4] He has spoken openly about working with ADHD, which he frames as a source of hyperfocus, and about being colour-blind, which he says reinforced his preference for data over aesthetics in web design.[2]

Public image and recognition [edit]

Quaid is an active commentator within the SEO community, publishing on his agency blog and appearing as a guest on industry podcasts and YouTube channels.[4] He has been included on third-party listings of AI and LLM SEO specialists and markets himself prominently as an "AI SEO" expert.[1] Because he shares a surname with the actor Dennis Quaid, he has published material clarifying that the two are unrelated.[7]

Personal life [edit]

Quaid lives between New York City and West Palm Beach, Florida.[1] He has spoken about valuing personal relationships above professional status, describing a loving partnership as his greatest achievement, and lists networking, travel and working with startups among his interests.[2][3]
